The Churches of Brenzone: A Journey Through Faith and Art

The municipality of Brenzone is home to a treasure trove of religious buildings, each reflecting local art, spirituality, and centuries of history. Many are set in breathtaking landscapes, making them perfect stops during a walk through villages and olive groves:

Chiesa di San Nicola (Assenza)

Built between the 11th and 12th centuries and dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra, this church was reconstructed in the 15th–16th centuries. It preserves rare medieval frescoes, including The Last Supper and images of saints such as Peter, Michael, and Lucy.

Chiesa di San Pietro in Vincoli (Campo)

Documented since at least the 14th century and restored between 1999 and 2003, this church still houses fragments of 15th-century frescoes and a medieval stone apse.

Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate (Biaza)

Dating back to the Middle Ages, this church features 15th–16th-century paintings, including a depiction of St. Christopher. Closed during the Napoleonic suppressions, it reopened around 1830.

Chiesa di San Zeno “de l’Oselet” (Castelletto)

Traditionally founded on the ruins of a Roman villa, this church has two naves and Romanesque frescoes of Byzantine influence (12th–13th centuries). It serves as both an oratory and a cemetery.

Chiesa di San Carlo Borromeo (Castelletto)

Built in the 17th century, expanded in the 18th, and rebuilt in 1908 in Neo-Gothic style, this church features side chapels, a gabled façade, and an adjoining bell tower.

Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta (Castello)

The parish church of the capital, constructed in 1813 and consecrated in 1930, represents an important community hub.

Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista (Magugnano)

Part of the Vicariate of Lago Veronese–Caprino, this church has been a social cornerstone of the village for centuries.

When Culture Meets Spirituality

Visits to these churches are often paired with cultural events: concerts, readings, themed exhibitions, and summer festivals. Many are open during patron saint celebrations or by appointment through the Tourism Office.
