Monte Baldo

Vertical nature between lake, sun and biodiversity

Rising behind Brenzone sul Garda is Monte Baldo, a mountain ridge stretching for over 40 kilometres and reaching an altitude of 2,218 meters. This massif dominates the landscape and plays a key role in shaping the region’s environment, climate, and identity.

The unique position of Monte Baldo, facing south and overlooking Lake Garda, creates ideal conditions for extraordinary biodiversity. The contrast between the lake’s mild climate and the altitude of its peaks allows alpine, Mediterranean, and pre-alpine species to coexist within the same ecological zone. For centuries, it has been known as the “Garden of Europe.”

Climbing up from Brenzone’s hamlets, the scenery changes quickly: olive groves give way to beech woods, meadows filled with seasonal blooms, and finally high mountain pastures. Among the plant species are rare wild orchids, gentians, edelweiss, and endemic plants found only here. In spring and summer, the trails burst with colour.

The fauna is equally rich: golden eagles, chamois, marmots, deer, foxes, and, with a bit of luck, stoats or black grouse can all be spotted. The great variety of butterflies is another sign of the area’s natural wealth.

Monte Baldo can be reached on foot via trails of varying difficulty, by mountain bike, or by taking the Prada Costabella cable car.

From its ridges, the view opens wide over the lake, the valleys, and, on clear days, even the central Alps.

It is an environment that invites respect and slow discovery, where every excursion becomes an opportunity to witness a rare balance between diverse natural elements, all coexisting within just a few kilometres of elevation.
